The Blurb –

On the banks of the River Seine in 1899, a young woman takes her final breath before plunging into the icy water. Although she does not know it, her decision will set in motion an astonishing chain of events. It will lead to 1950s Norway, where a grieving toy-maker is on the cusp of a transformative invention, all the way to present-day Canada where a journalist, battling a terrible disease, risks everything for one last chance to live.

Taking inspiration from a remarkable true story, Coming Up for Air is a bold, richly imagined novel about the transcendent power of storytelling and the immeasurable impact of every human life.

Today is my stop on the Coming Up for Air blog tour. Many thanks to Anne Cater for the chance to read and review.

My thoughts – This is such a beautiful book and expertly written. Three life stories are seamlessly intertwined as the author takes us on a moving journey.

In 1899 a woman throws herself into the Seine killing herself. Once her body is found the mortician is overcome by her beauty and creates a death mask of her face. The lady’s death leads to a man in the 1950’s so distraught with grief he is surviving rather than living, which links to present day Canada where a young woman is battling a illness.

The power of this book is that it shows how all lives are connected even though at first you can not see a link. The writing is exquisite and the use of water and air as themes is so clever.

Just an amazing book.
